WEEK 9

Final week everyone! Great job so far this term but now we're reaching the end of this trek :)

For this last week:
  1. Choose ANY artist of your liking.
  2. Do ONE final painting: Preferably a brand new concept/idea influenced by the chosen artist's style 
  3. Optional: If it helps you, you could also include a master copy, still life painting, or photo conversion

Last Notes of the Class [Industry Q&A]:

·      You’re not being necessarily paid for your talent and creativity but rather the amount of time that’s taken from your day
o   Studios will always try to money pinch you because of budgetary reasons, which is why you have to stand up for what your worth
·      $50/hour is a good base salary for a starting artist in the industry
·      Learn to put your ego to the side when you work with a team or a company because it’s more than just about what you want seen in the final product. Always remember that you’re contributing to something greater than yourself
·      A good trick to approaching your homework assignments in school is to treat it like a job.
o   Pace yourself and keep track of the time it takes for you to finish a set amount of paintings
·      Learn to play the game: The studio thinks John Park does a painting for one day... but in reality, he’s giving himself some leverage and legroom to be able have the “extra” time to prevent any risks or without getting himself backed up against the wall; the ability to do 2-3 days’ worth of work in just one day without the studio’s knowledge: Give yourself a life discount.
·      You increase your rate based on your comfort and experience
o   Before you start hiking up your rates for future jobs, make sure you still have a backup job.
§  Like speed dating, you want to be desirable in the studio’s eyes. Stay cool and have a level mind
·      Work smarter, not harder and plan out your lifelong roadmap so you don’t end up in a situation where you can screw yourself over!
o   One of my all-time favorite sayings I can’t recall which film I heard it from but is: “Life is a bitch, and her stripper name is Karma”
·      Design is essentially: Understanding function and applying aesthetic [inspiration]
o   Audi is inspired by a loaf of bread, Lamborghini is inspired by origami

o   As concept designers, we have to manage another tier alongside the two which is: story. How do we balance function? With Aesthetic? While still being able to convey a narrative?

WEEK 7

For this week:
[1] Pick one of the three artists: Sargent, Zorn, or Schmidt
[2] Create a pseudo master copy and/or a still life painting
Apply what you've learned from these artists

  • Start off by giving yourself around 2-3 brushes as your primary tool
    • it will streamline your process of painting
  • Tone the overall page generally with a warm tone
    • then establish the sky tone
    • start off by looking everything as a graphic shape representing the actual masses of the subject matter
  • Establish local colors
  • Keep it really loose at first and try to avoid rendering or zoning in on small details until the later stages after the foundation is established
  • Ideally, you want to keep it simple yet informative
  • Learn how to reverse engineer a finished image
  • Understanding how to add things in and how to edit things out
  • Study real life

Notes:
Syd mead focuses on design more than anything else
How to design: Have reference and artist inspiration and do your own version
            Build visual vocabulary
            By copying, you install all that visual vocabulary into your head to apply to your own future 
Look up reference images that before attempting a design...
            vibe off of the atmosphere and play around with the shapes
            ‘training-wheels method’: copy basically 90% of the image and add 10% of your own taste/flavor
           
"Over-rendering is like over explaining something."
            Brush economy: get to the point.
